BMW E46 Daily – 320cd

I’ve been reflecting on the BMW as a daily, I have no complaints. It’s done what i’d expect and very well. I’m going to break it down into a few point points below

  1. Costs
  2. Comfort
  3. Fun

1. The fist one on the list, the costs involved. The one that scares the most people away, i’ll start with the obvious. Thing’s will go wrong on but you deal with it, the same way you deal with a crying nephew or when you forget that fake pound coin during a trip to the supermarket. Anyway, as a breakdown.

Core

  • 2 tyres – £100
  • MOT and regualar service parts – £100 (it’s had one MOT and one service in my 10 months ownership with another service due now)
  • Healthcheck – £100
  • Eibach coilovers – £200

Extras

  • Alloy Refurbishment – £220
  • Full Enhancement Detail – £200
  • I like to spend money on cool detailing products – £???

2. The second is comfort, the most surprising one for me personally. I wanted to follow on from the previous point about costs, and the miles per gallon it gets, around 42. And around 750 Miles per tank – ish when doing motorway miles. And this leads me onto comfort, it’s how comfortable those motorway miles are with cruise control. Never had it, I love it, highly reccomend. My next car will definatly have it.

The Eibach coilovers helped a lot with comfort. I listed it as a core cost but really two were bad on opposite ends of the car. I thought it’s best to do all sides instead of a mix match of new and old parts. Plus, being at opposite ends, meant it’d be only slightly less in terms of cost to buy two singles rather than a 2 sets. It’s very confortable and the same stiffness as the regular M Sport suspension.

3. Yes, it’s economical on long distances but being a diesel it also packs a punch in terms of torque. It shifts, and I think that torque makes it feel quicker on shorter runs. I’ve always been a fan of petrols but this has impressed me a lot. Granted that MPG will drop a lot but who cares, smiles per gallon. I’ll leave it at that, the car’s a lot of fun, costs could become an issue if it’s not maintained well. But as is with any car. Sure it costs slightly more, but it’s the price for a lot of fun.
